Coffee consumption trends in the U.S. - statistics & facts

Coffee is the largest segment in the hot beverage market. The coffee industry creates many trends, which means that the popularity among consumers is constantly increasing, and the market is growing. There is a wide variety of coffee-based beverages on offer, and the options are constantly being expanded.

In 2023, the coffee market in the United States generated a revenue of almost 85 billion U.S. dollars, of which roasted coffee formed the largest share. That year, the revenue of roasted coffee amounted to just over 70 billion U.S. dollars. The average American spent 207 U.S. dollars on roasted coffee. In comparison, instant coffee achieved only an average revenue of roughly 43 U.S. dollars per person. When it comes to which brand of coffee Americans prefer to drink, Starbucks was chosen by approximately 48 percent of respondents from a 2023 survey as their favorite coffee brand. It was followed by Dunkin’ and Folgers.

How do American consumers drink their coffee?

In December 2023, a survey revealed that most coffee consumers preferred drinking their hot beverage with milk/creamer. The combination of milk/creamer and additional sweetener was almost as popular. The same survey also found that about 16 percent only drink decaf. Decaffeinated coffee is not entirely caffeine-free, but it only contains about two milligrams per cup, which is significantly less than regular caffeinated coffee. In addition to the consumption of normal coffee, other coffee-based drinks or dishes were also very popular in the United States. Coffee cake, coffee ice cream or Irish coffee were the top three choices among Americans.

Do consumers in the U.S. drink coffee every day?

The majority of American consumers drink coffee every day. In fact, about 73 percent reported drinking coffee every day, and only almost four percent of consumers reported drinking coffee once a week. Recently, it was also discovered that Gen Z (born in 2000 or later) doesn't drink coffee regularly. The majority said they only consumed it occasionally a week. For the other generations (Millennials, Gen X, Baby Boomers, and Silent Generation), it became clear that most of them drink coffee daily.
