Number of payment partners used by online merchants 2022, by size
Small and medium-sized e-commerce companies tend to have fewer digital payment partners than larger firms. A survey of merchants involved in e-commerce fraud and payment management worldwide showed that, on average, mid-market and large enterprises supported more than four payment gateway or processor connections. In contrast, for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), the number stood at 3.2. SMBs also had a significantly lower quantity of bank payment partners, with only 2.7 acquiring banks used as of late 2022.
