Leading tropical cyclones globally 1970-2019, by economic damage
Three of the ten costliest tropical cyclones recorded in the past half a century occured in 2017. That year, cyclones Harvey and Irma, which hit the U.S., and Maria, which hit Puerto Rico, resulted combined in roughly 225 billion U.S. dollars worth of economic damage. Hurricane Katrina was the largest tropical cyclone recorded in terms of economic losses since 1970, at over 163 billion dollars.
