Changes in land use, associated with deforestation and wildfires, is the main cause of greenhouse gas emissions in the Amazon biome in Brazil. In 2022, it accounted for a share of almost 80 percent. The agriculture and livestock sector ranked second, generating an estimated 174 million tons of CO₂ equivalent worth of emissions in 2022.
