Average air quality index India 2022, by select city

New Delhi had the highest average air quality index (AQI) in India in 2022, at 219. An AQI between 201 and 300 is classified as unhealthy. By comparison, Chennai had an AQI of 60. While an AQI between 51 and 100 is regarded as acceptable, air pollution at this level can still lead to moderate health concerns.

Air pollution in India

Air pollution is a continuing issue throughout India, with more than 96 percent of the country’s population exposed to hazardous concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5). In 2022, the South Asian country had one of highest average PM2.5 concentrations worldwide, at 55 µg/m3. This was more than 10 times the World Health Organization’s recommended limit.

Health effects of air pollution

Exposure to air pollution can lead to a range of health issues, such as strokes, respiratory conditions, and cardiovascular disease. In 2022, 80 percent of residents in Delhi reported that they, or a family member, suffered from multiple ailments due to toxic air. Air pollution is also attributable to millions of premature deaths every year around the world, with India one of the most affected countries.
