CET1 ratio of the banking industry in Belgium 2014-2022
Despite minor fluctuations, the resilience of Belgian banks increased between 2014 and 2022, as the sector's CET1 ratio grew by more than two percentage points during this period. The CET1 ratio shows how much core capital the bank has versus its outstanding risks. Simply put, it displays how much capital a bank has in reserve in the event their investments go bad. The ratio is an important measure that was introduced in 2014, following the financial crisis, to prevent a future financial crisis. By 2019, banks are expected to reach a minimum requirement of 4.5 percent.
