Greenhouse gas emissions from shipping in the UK 1990-2022
Domestic and international shipping in the United Kingdom emitted 5.3 and 6.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) in 2022, respectively. Annual international shipping emissions have been higher than domestic shipping emissions since 2008. Although UK shipping emissions have increased slightly since 2020, they have seen an overall reduction of 22 percent since 2005. Plans to further reduce UK maritime emissions will involve phasing out the sale of new non-zero emission domestic shipping vessels, as well as encouraging the uptake of renewable hydrogen.
