Christmas shopping in Latin America – statistics & facts

From posadas in Mexico to novenas in Colombia, the Christmas season in Latin America is full of diverse celebrations and unique traditions. The traditionally Christian holiday is celebrated among close family members or extended relatives around decorated trees, nativity scenes, gifts, and big feasts. According to a 2022 survey, the biggest priorities when going Christmas shopping among Latin American consumers were the Christmas presents, Christmas dinner, and clothing and accessories. When it came to the younger generations, spending time with the family held the biggest meaning of Christmas for children and teens in Latin America.

However, with a region as diverse as Latin America, Christmas customs and consumer behavior greatly vary from one country to another, ranging from more indoor winter celebrations in Mexico to summer blowouts in Brazil or Argentina.

Brazil

With the largest population in the region, the Portuguese-speaking giant was estimated to generate over 60 billion Brazilian reals from retail sales during the Christmas season in 2022. Therefore, it is not surprising that close to 100,000 new temporary retail jobs were created to meet the seasonal increase in sales in Brazil that Christmas. While some people help out restocking, the majority of these seasonal retail jobs were expected to employ salespeople in 2023. Furthermore, over a quarter of these seasonal hires were expected to work in the footwear and apparel sector.

Colombia

For many Colombians, the Christmas season already starts on December 7, with the celebration of Día de las velitas, or Little Candles Day. However, most Colombians start preparing for the Christmas season much earlier. In 2023, almost half of Colombian consumers planned to do their Christmas shopping as early as November, with a significant amountnumber of consumers planning to take advantage of the November shopping events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Mexico

As one of the few Latin American countries on in the Northern Hemisphere, and thus celebrating the end of the year during winter, Christmas traditions and celebrations in Mexico are focused on family and friends. And just as in other countries in the region, Christmas dinner tops all other priorities when it comes to Christmas shopping in Mexico. Still, Christmas presents made up three times more of the total cost of Christmas in Mexico than the Christmas dinner.
