This statistic represents the pretext due to which hate crimes occurred in India between 2010 and March 2019. As seen in the graph, hate crimes with the pretext of cow protection were the highest with 27 reported cases, followed by interfaith relationships.
Hate crimes are crimes are committed against a person not because of what a person might have done, but because of their real or perceived membership of a particular group such as religion, caste or ethnicity. Reports of religion-based hate-crimes have spiked in India since the pro-Hindu nationalist government of Narendra Modi came to power in 2014. However, the government does not record religion-based crimes as separate offenses and so does not provide official data on the category.
