This statistic displays the number of full-time equivalent registered nurses per occupied bed in the United States, by case mix index from 2015 to 2017. In 2016, the nurses-to-bed ratio was 2.07 for acute-care cases with a severity of CMI larger than 1.5.

* Severity is approximated by the case mix index (CMI), which is a statistical measure of the average amount of resources consumed per Medicare inpatient case at a hospital. Hospitals that tend to treat more resource-intensive (i.e., severe) cases will have a higher calculated CMI.
FTE = full-time equivalent.
A census bed is licensed, physically available, staffed, and occupied by a patient at the time of reporting. Figures differ from previous editions due to increased availability of staffed bed counts.
