Hiking was the most popular outdoor activity amongst people in the United States in 2022, accounting for nearly 60 million participants. The second most popular outdoor sport in the North American country was running, jogging, and trail running with 56.9 million participants during the same year. 

Physical activity in the United States

The share of people who took part in outdoor sports in the United States increased year-on-year from 2014 to 2023. In 2023, around 57 percent of the U.S. population participated in outdoor sports. One year prior, in 2022, 55 percent of the U.S. population participated in outdoor sports. 

The Great Outdoors

The United States is renowned worldwide for its natural beauty, making it a prime location for recreational outdoor activities. In 2023, American national parks received 92.39 million visitors combined. Six of the ten longest hiking trails in the world are located in United States; however, the longest trail in the world, The Great Trail, is located in Canada.
