Number of stolen firearms reported in South Africa 2022/2023, by province
As of the fiscal year 2022/2023, the South African Police Services recorded a total of 7,653 stolen firearms. The Gauteng province had the highest incidence of stolen firearms, with just over 2,400 reports. On the other hand, 588 guns were reported as lost, with the majority occurring in KwaZulu-Natal. A significant amount of these lost and stolen firearms form part of the illegal firearms circulation in the country.
