Minimum Vital Income (Salario MÃnimo Vital or SMI), a non-contributory benefit from the Spanish Social Security which aims at helping people or household units at risk of poverty and social exclusion.
As the Spanish welfare state grew along the country's democracy, so did the impact of the welfare system on inequality. Inequality reduction as a result of the social security and tax system peaked in 2014, when the Gini index declined to 38 percent.
