The Summer Olympics have been played nearly every four years since 1896. Initially, men's events made up the entirety of the Summer Olympic Games, but the share of women's events increased annually starting in 1900. By the 2020 Summer Olympics, the share of men's and women's events were nearly equal, with men's events making up just over 48 percent of Summer Olympic events, and women's events making up just over 46 percent.
