Share of COVID-19 deaths over total deaths in Italy 2020, by month and macro region
Over the course of 2020, 75,891 deaths caused by COVID-19 were reported to the authorities in Italy. In total, the number of deaths in the country surpassed 746 thousand, the highest figure registered since World War II. This statistic reports the incidence of COVID-19 related deaths over the total number of deaths in each month of 2020 since the start of the pandemic. This incidence is broken down by macro region. The virus, in fact, spread first in Northern Italy, where it caused a dramatic number of deaths during the first wave. As it is possible to see from the graph, Central and Southern regions were harshly hit too during the second wave. Overall, officially registered COVID-19 deaths accounted for 10.2 percent of the total number of deaths in Italy in 2020.
