There was a significant increase in the number of texts messages to the SAMHSA's Disaster Distress Helpline in April 2020, as compared with the same time in the previous year, highlighting a significant mental health repercussion of COVID-19. This statistic shows the number of texts to the Disaster Distress Helpline comparing April 2019 and April 2020. The Disaster Distress Helpline is maintained by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and provides guidance and help for people in emotional distress due to natural disasters of all kind. An infectios disease outbreak like the current COVID-19 pandemic is also categorized as a disaster.
