With 69 public hospitals located in New South Wales (NSW) major cities, NSW was the state with the highest number of public hospitals in 2019. Queensland and Western Australia had the highest number of remote public hospitals with 33 and 35 respectively.

In 2019 there was a total of 695 public hospitals in Australia.
