Ukraine's press freedom index in 2024 was 65, an improvement on the 2023 score. The index presents an overview of the plurality and independence of the media and how safe and free it is for journalists to do their job, with higher scores indicating a better situation for the press and lower scores a worse one.

According to the source, the "methodology defines press freedom as “the effective possibility for journalists, as individuals and as groups, to select, produce and disseminate news and information in the public interest, independently from political, economic, legal and social interference, and without threats to their physical and mental safety.” In order to reflect press freedom’s complexity, five new indicators are now used to compile the Index: the political context, legal framework, economic context, sociocultural context, and security. The Index’s rankings are based on a score ranging from 0 to 100 that is assigned to each country or territory, with 100 being the best possible score (the highest possible level of press freedom) and 0 the worst" as follows:

85-100 points: Good situation

70-85 points: Satisfactory situation

55-70 points: Problematic situation

40-55 points: Difficult situation

0-40 points: Very serious situation.
