U.S. book market - format market shares 2023

In June 2023, paperback books had a market share of 38.8 percent, whilst hardbacks accounted for 30.2 percent of total trade book sales. Audiobooks gained ground between June 2020 and June 2023, whereas the share of sales made up by e-books dropped by three percent in the same period. Print still accounts for the majority of trade sales. Figures included in the Excel download file reveal that for the first six months of each year running from 2011 to 2019, paperback and hardback books accounted for between approximately 25 to 35 percent of all trade sales, figures which remain relatively unchanged in the snapshots taken between 2020 and 2023.
