For the 2019-2020 school year, about 1.95 billion U.S. dollars were spent in California for preschool education - the most out of any state. Texas, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois rounded out the top five states for preschool education spending in that year.

1,260 children with instructional IEPs were served in Iowa’s SWVPP program but were funded by sources not reported by the state. Similar to prior years, these children were removed from the per- child spending calculations.

There are no pre-kindergarten programs in the following states for year 2019-2020: Idaho, Indiana, Montana, New Hampshire, South Dakota, and Wyoming.
