The Chinese smartphone market – additional information
Since 2011, the number of smartphone shipments in China has increased significantly, reaching a peak in the fourth quarter of 2015 with 117 million units shipped. Despite a slight slump during the first quarter of 2015, more smartphones were shipped in China than in any other country: China was responsible for nearly 30 percent of smartphone shipments worldwide in 2015, which was almost three times as much as the United States, for example. With smartphone shipments estimated to reach nearly 400 million units in 2016, China is projected to maintain its position as the world’s top smartphone market.
While Samsung and Apple remain the market leaders in terms of global smartphone shipments, the Chinese smartphone vendor Huawei is gaining market share, topping 100 milion units in smartphone sales in 2015 for the first time. By the first quarter of 2016, Huawei managed to claim the top position in its home market, accounting for 15.8 percent of shipments. Meanwhile, OPPO and Vivo also strengthened their position in the Chinese market taking market share from the likes of Xiaomi and Apple.
